World Pharmacists Day 2017 Celebration at UMMC

World Pharmacists Day is celebrated annually on 25th September.

However, UMMC is jumping the gun by celebrating early this year, beginning today until 4.00pm tomorrow, 20th September 2017.

The Opening Ceremony was officiated this morning by the Deputy Director of Clinical Services of UMMC, Prof. Madya Dr. Nazirah binti Hasnan, at the Concourse of Menara Utama.

To add to the celebrations, there was a prize giving ceremony for the winners of Pharmacy Poster Competition 2017, tokens of gratitude were presented to collaborators of the celebration and the Inpatient Medication Delivery Bag was launched by Pharmacy Department.

Visitor will also be able to enjoy the various booths set up to provide information and some small bit of entertainment.

UMMC Pharmacy Department held its Family Dinner at Restoran Rebung Chef Ismail, Taman Botani Perdana, Kuala Lumpur with the theme "Ala Kampung".

Model of Good Care Workshop: Inpatient Pharmacy Services

Saturday, 12th August 2017; 8.30am to 3.30pm:

The Inpatient Pharmacy Services Team held its Model of Good Care Workshop at the Auditorium, 13th Floor Menara Selatan.
   

Attendees mainly consisted of Pharmacy Assistants and Provisionally Registered Pharmacists. There were several Diploma of Pharmacy Students as well as Pharmacists from other sections in attendance as well.
   

The topics highlighted in this workshop are:
  1. Medication errors reports and analysis
  2. Paediatric dose calculations end extemporaneous paediatric syrup preparations
  3. LASA items and High Alert Medications
  4. Management of antibiotics supply
  5. Criteria for supply of urgent medication orders
  6. Safe handling of hazardous chemicals
  7. Renal dose adjustments and interpretation of relevant laboratory results
  8. Management of Dangerous Drugs and Psychotropic Substances.
   

All participants were required to do a pre-workshop and post-workshop test to gauge the effectiveness of the workshop.

Clarifying Special Medication Supply Flow to Federal Pensioners

21st July 2017, 11.30am to 1.00pm:

A "town-hall" gathering for UMMC staff was held at Dewan Sekapur Sirih, 1st Floor Emergency Building to clarify the current flow for supply of Special Formulary and PharmUMMC items to Federal Pensioners and their dependants, now that E-MASS has been discontinued.

The brief was given by UMMC Chief Pharmacist, Puan Hajjah Che Zuraini Sulaiman, followed by an in-depth summary by UMMC Deputy Director (Professional), Associate Prof. Azura Mansor.

The audience were made to understand the difference between the different categories of Government Servants and Pensioners and how the flow differs for each.

In general, doctors were advised to be more restrained in their choice of treatment unless there is no better than to prescribe a Special Formulary or PharmUMMC item.

Work Ergonomics Talk

20th July 2017, 12.15pm to 1.15pm:

Dr. Nany Hairunisa of Occupational Safety, Health and Environment Unit gave a talk on "Ergonomics for Hospital Pharmacies" to Pharmacy Staff.
     

It was a most enlightening lecture but putting the recommendations into practice will prove challenging.

For example, pushing a trolley is the safer way to move it.
However, since medication transport trolleys are usually piled high with items, the staff is unable to see what is ahead of them if they were to push the trolley.
The recommendation is to have 2 staff handle the trolley: one in front to guide the way, the other to push.

With the current limitations in resources, assigning 2 staff per trolley is not possible.

Hopefully, Pharmacy will be able to overcome the challenges to generate a safe environment and culture for our staff to work in.

Re-Opening of the Sterile Complex

2nd June 2017 (Circular NO. SP PPUM:  207/2017):

UMMC Pharmacy's Sterile Complex will finally resume its full services beginning 5th June 2017!

The Complex could only be re-opened 2 weeks after the original target date of 21st May 2017 due to the amount of repairs required.
 
Therefore, all orders for Cytotoxic Drug Reconstitution, Parenteral Nutrition and Intravenous Admixtures should now be sent to the Chemotherapy Screening at Inpatient Pharmacy, 1st Floor Menara Utama (currently located temporarily at Surgery Clinic).

Temporary Relocation for Chemotherapy Preparation Supply Activities

4th-5th May 2017:
Beginning 4th May 2017 until 21st May 2017 tentatively, the supply of Chemotherapy Medications will be done from Paediatrics Pharmacy at 2nd Floor Kompleks Kesihatan Wanita dan Kanak-Kanak.

This is due to the temporary closure of Pharmacy's Sterile Complex for ceiling repair work.

Chemotherapy protocols and prescriptions will be received at Paediatrics Pharmacy counter (1), then sent for screening at Pharmacy's alternate Manufacturing Suite (2).

The raw materials required for each preparation is prepared, sealed (3) and delivered to a laboratory on the 11th floor. Once received at the laboratory, the raw materials are swabbed with alcohol then reconstituted in a Laminar Flow Hood using a closed-system transfer device known as "Phaseal" to avoid environmental contamination (4).

Prepared Chemotherapy Medications are sealed and checked (5) before being returned to Paediatrics Pharmacy for dispensing (6).

SIRIM MS ISO 9001:2015 Recertification Audit

25th-28th April 2017:

Pharmacy was audited on Thursday, 27th April 2017 afternoon by Puan Ham Fin Lan of the SIRIM QAS Audit Team.
 

The focus of the audit was on safety and control measures related to the manufacturing of Parenteral Nutrition bags.
 

The auditor was satisfied that Pharmacy is compliant with the requirements of MS ISO 9001:2015 throughout this process.

Pre-SIRIM Audit Walk About

Tuesday, 18th April 2017:

A group consisting of Pharmacy's Department Quality Managers (DQM) and Persons-in-Charge of a section went on a walk about to all relevant sites.
This is to evaluate our level of preparedness for the coming SIRIM Audit for Recertification to the latest Malaysian Standard (MS) ISO 9001:2015.
