Medication Alert!- Thalidomide Class of Medication

6th June 2017 (Circular NO. SP PPUM: 211/2017) & 13th June 2017 (Circular NO. SP PPUM: 214 /2017):

In UMMC, Thalidomide is an oral medication used in the treatment of Multiple Myeloma (cancer of white blood cells).
Other medications of the same class as Thalidomide are Pomalidomide and Lenalidomide (unavailable in UMMC).
  

The National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) advises Healthcare Providers to carefully screen their patients before prescribing this class of medications.
Patients should likewise make their doctors aware if they have the following conditions prior to starting a Thalidomide Class of medications therapy:

Have been previously infected with varicella-zoster virus (chickenpox, shingles)

Have been previously infected with Hepatitis B virus

Have been previously infected with Hepatitis B virusHave been previously infected with Hepatitis B virus
Showing signs & symptoms of underlying cardio-pulmonary disease

It is important that these facts be made known before using any of the Thalidomide Class of medications to prevent any serious adverse events during treatment.
